Until the development of NeuOra CBD. there were three primary methods for consuming CBD:

1. Topical — applying it to your skin;
2. Oral — swallowing it in pill form and;
3. Sublingual — placing oil under your tongue,

The potency of CBD and its ability to get into and stay in your system long enough for therapeutic effects (bioavailability) varies depending on the method you choose to consume it.

Absorption After Topical Application

When CBD oil is applied topically, or directly to the skin, it never reaches the bloodstream but can be absorbed through the skin’s surface to interact with nearby cannabinoid receptors. This provides some therapeutic relief. Human skin in general has low permeability, which means it blocks most substances from entering. The skin has a particularly low absorption rate for cannabinoids, so the bioavailability of CBD balms, salves, and lotions is near zero.

Absorption After Oral Ingestion

When CBD is ingested in pill or capsule form, it is absorbed by the digestive system. From the stomach, the compounds enter the hepatic portal system, where they are carried through the portal vein into the liver. The liver then metabolizes the CBD molecules, in what’s referred to as the “first pass effect.” Enzymes in the liver then act upon CBD, reducing its concentration and potency before passing on what remains to the bloodstream. Up to 98% of CBD’s potency is lost in this process.

Sublingual Absorption

If CBD oil is held under the tongue for 60 to 90 seconds before being swallowed, the mucus membranes in the mouth can absorb some of the compounds. This sublingual method allows CBD to partially bypass the digestive system and liver metabolism. The catch is much of the CBD is swallowed and goes through the digestive system and loses potency similar to oral absorption.
